On April 7th, ISWS had the pleasure of hosting it’s second annual soccer tournament for children and adults with special needs in our home town of Austin, Texas. This tournament came to be last year after we were searching for a way to assist, not only in Africa, but also in our local community. We decided to start by coaching and sponsoring the Austin Parks & Recreations Special Olympics soccer team. After training for ~ 3 months for the Special Olympics competition, heavy rains came and the event was cancelled. Unfortunately, Special Olympics does not reschedule rained out events. Needless to say, we were disappointed for our players and those of the other Special Olympics delegations in the area that had trained so hard and would not get the opportunity to play, so we decided to do what we do well in Africa… We put on our own soccer tournament! It was a huge success, and this year it was even bigger and better!!
All the participants received medals for participation, as well as water and nourishment that were generously donated by Chick-fil-A and HEB. Byrne Rock DJ provided the music and Austin Parks & Recreations provided the soccer fields. It was an amazing time and an honor and priviledge to host this event and to be able to give back to our local community in Central Texas!
